Sean and I reflected on our figure drawing assessment for last week. Discussed the pro's and con's.
We discussed Art I smart goals.
After viewing the data from our smart goal ( last year), we decided that we needed to continue pursue same smart goal due to the fact we did not reach our goal... "to have 80% of our students to completely render the Self Portrait drawings by the last day of classes before final exams".
We plan to tweak the curriculum a little further to achieve this goal. Our first strategy is to rewrite a common assessment for the project (together). Our focus will be to include expectations concerning the "finished" attributes of the drawing.

PLC #13 High School
Anticipating that our goals were not clear enough (and that some needed revision), Sean and I have rewrote our goals for posting. The following is our 2nd attempt at identifying our second semester goals….
Art I (Sean and Brian)
Our goal is to have 80% of our students to completely render the Self Portrait drawings by the last day of classes before final exams.
Why- The reason we need to do this is because our data showed that more than half of the students (in both of our classes) were below 60% of completion of the self-portrait project. The extra time will give the students a total of 4 weeks two days for completion of this project (a 25% of time increase from last semester).
Strategy- We will add 8 more days of studio time and a mid-point critique for the students to develop their drawings… (This means restructuring calendar assignments).
IB Art (Sean)
70% of our IB students will demonstrate cultural investigation in their investigation workbooks based on IB’s requirements by April 2nd, 2009.
Why- The progress check has revealed that 50% of the IB Students have not achieved an 80% or higher score last semester in their IB investigation workbooks
Strategy- to have the students review weekly specific rubrics for their investigation workbooks, which will be assessed bi-weekly using a revised rubric.
Computer Art II
75% students will demonstrate above 90% on the creative, expression and communicative "state standard" throughout their mural project upon completion of their portfolio by March 1, 2009.
Why- less then 45% of the student are not meeting creative, expression and communicative state standards revealed through spring 2008 projects.
Strategy- Students will we be responsible for acquiring and developing their own digital imagery and are strongly encouraged to participate in presenting and competing with their mural at the regional Governors show this March.

PLC 12
On Monday, Sean and I compared contour line drawings in our Art I class from last week. We discussed the current project (an abstract painting exercise). We discussed how to help students focus on creating stronger compositions using the “elements of design concepts which Sean introduced to me this semester.

PLC # 11 High School
Sean and I took a look at the rest of the calendar year. We mapped it out on paper and discussed all assignment to be covered in art one, specifically analyzing time constraints and things we want to cover. We also looked over each others classes current contour drawings and discussed assessment and readiness.

PLC #10
Sean and I continued where we left off with our last PLC meeting. Today we discussed our individual together) class's smart goals.
Sean's smart goal is for his IB class. His goal is to revise the rubrics for investigation workbooks in order to meet new requirements and language challenge for the IB exam. His main challenges are preparing students for external assessment for they have limited pages that they can submit to reveal their success. The students need to show "more" with less. Furthermore, students will need to reach all categories and levels of the requirements. Sean plans to collect the students "investigation workbooks" every two weeks and assess their progress using a newly revised rubric. The rubric is designed/based on the requirements of the new IB language for final assessment. This will reveal student goals that need improvement on.
My semester's smart goal is for my Computer Art II class. My goal is to have students create a new work of art (a graphic novel mural) that is designed primarily for the 2009 Ohio Governor's Art Show. There are many smaller goals contained in the project itself but the main goal is new to the program which I hope will provide an authentic experience for the student as an artist. The goal's success can be measure through various tools but truly if the student's work is accepted in the show, and if they do then they have succeeded at the "highest" level. The original challenge of this goal was to provide the students with a long range goal for their art work... not just to create it for a grade.

PLC # 9 High School
Hi Gang, Sorry we haven't posted our PLC's lately. Sean and I have been swamped in the last month and a half. All is well. The issue about the clay and which art room to teach it was decided by our administration. It turns out that I will have to teach this class in Sean's room after all because of the computer issues. This will be impossible but we will struggle through... I guess.
Today's meeting... several topics.
Our first was a continuation of the logistics of the sculpture class and Sean's room.
Secondly was about computer shortage for both my room and his.
Lastly, we spent much of our time creating our smart goal for this semester.
Art I and the "Still life" project:
We have discussed this with you all in previous blog... but Sean and I are now considering some major revisions with the project. Our goal is maintain our previous goals through redistribution of time.
After reviewing the data (results of the finished still life projects, by our students) we believe that the still life project should be removed from our curriculum. Student simply could not complete the drawings (with the exception of maybe 3 or 4 out of 100 students) with any measurable degree of success or completeness.
The greatest challenges we met with the assignment was
-time... not enough of it (being only a semester class and all).
-productivity (the projects robs time from other more valuable projects)
-necessity (can we reach our goals without this project)
-readiness (are the students to take on this task and instead should wait till they reach art two.

We believe we can have the students succeed with these objectives through other current projects/exercises we have in place. The three weeks gained by removing the assignment will promote more complete work from the students in all these other assignments.

High School PLC #5 and 6- Nov. 10 & 17
Both meetings have been discussing current projects (value scales and still life drawings... which we decided to do) and the progress between our two classes... comparing results, discussing how to improve success, etc. We also discussed the logistics to have students begin their self portrait projects this week. Because this is a new project for Art I (at least the way the students will be doing it), we needed to brainstormed the steps to create it and the concerns associated with the project.
Yesterday's (Nov 17) meeting primarily focused on space issues in Sean's room. Basically, he has no room and he is now about to start painting with one of his classes (20-something students). So we discussed easels (building them), storage space, and other issues surrounding up and coming classes.
One conclusion that we have settled on is that we can not have a sculpture class in Sean's room... there is no space for it. So this will be a big issue in the next few weeks of how we are going to approach this concern. In the end, we believe that the sculpture class will be in the other art room which has it's obvious problems (i.e.- computers, no kiln).
